PYC chains, what are the differences between them?

For every type of bike, PYC has a suitable chain.

Standard or Premium quality

What is the difference between a Standard and a Premium bike chain at PYC?

Every PYC bicycle chain that leaves the factory has a wear-resistant surface treatment. So how does the Standard (low segment) chain differ from the Premium (high segment)? The difference lies in the additional treatment called Chrome Harden Tech. This treatment increases the hardness of the chain components, which greatly improves the durability and longevity of the chain.

The weight

What factors influence the weight of the bike chain?

First of all, it is important to know which type of cyclist will use the chain. For a racing cyclist, the weight of the chain can make all the difference, while for an MTB rider it is all about a powerful chain for the most extreme conditions.

But what makes one bike chain lighter (or heavier) than another? It has to do with the design of the chain components. Do you need an extremely light chain? Then the pins of the chain are hollow and the chain plates have recesses. However, when the bike chain is used for an e-bike or e.g. a mountain bike, strength is again an essential factor. These chains are therefore solid and have dense pins with a mushroom-shaped end, which in turn makes the chain heavier and stronger.

Weight of PYC bicycle chains

#440311.01, the lightest bike chain, thanks to fully hollow chain components. Weight 236 grams.

#440312.02, solid chain with mushroom-shaped pins. Weight 271 grams.

Chamfered chainplates

What is the function of a chamfer on chain plates?

I hear you thinking; What is a chamfer? A chamfer is a beveled edge made on a chainplate. Because the chain plate is bevelled on the edge, the chain experiences less friction during shifting. This makes shifting smoother and the chain lasts longer. Apart from the BMX bike chain (#440320.01), all chains have bevelled edges on the inner and/or outer side of the chain plates. Good to know!

Type of chainring

Which bike chains are also suitable for a narrow-wide chainring?

Besides normal chainrings, there are also narrow-wide chainrings nowadays. But what exactly is a narrow-wide chainring? In a chainring with a narrow-wide tooth profile, the teeth alternate between narrow and wide. This makes it virtually impossible for the chain to run off, thus eliminating the need for a chain guide. However, this type of chainring also demands something extra from the chain, which not all bike chains can handle.
